Many people don’t know what an estuary is because the name is unfamiliar. Estuaries are also called bays, harbors, lagoons or sounds. An estuary is where salt water and fresh water meet. They protect the inland from the full force ocean. Estuaries feature mudflats, sandpits, and barrier islands. In addition, estuaries are homes to many plants and animals.
Estuaries can be found in many places all over the world. In New Jersey you can find estuaries on the coast, Whale Creek, Gunning Island, and Hoboken Cove. In other places around the world, they can be found in Maryland, California, Louisiana, Virginia, New Zealand, Florida, and even New York.
